Appomattox was the Final Battle in the War that Turned Brother Against Brother.
It was the Spring of 1865 when the Confederate Army was trekking west through Virginia. They were cut off and on the run. With moving south out of the option, Robert E Lee led his forces west to the Appomattox Court House. They arrived on April 8. They intended on heading to the South Side Railroad in town. Supplies were waiting there. Unfortunately for them, they were cut off. They became surrounded and could not escape. The next day, the Confederate Army surrendered.
The opposing generals - Lee and the Union's Grant - decided to meet at the house of Wilmer McLean. Interestingly, Grant suggested a surrender before the battle. This two and a half hour meeting saw the official conclusion to the nation's bloodiest war. Part of the agreement let men easily return home with pets and food.
I picked this one because this was the last time in our history that fellow countrymen would be turned against each other.
