With the Signing of this Treaty, the States were Legitimately a World Power.
Our shortest war was the Spanish-American War, which lasted for scarcely more than 3 months. It all began in February 1898 after an American ship sank in Cuban waters. Fighting occurred in Cuba and Puerto Rico. The States were mostly helping Cubans and Puerto Ricans fight for independence from Spain. War was declared in April, but the final battle was in July. The Spanish ended up surrendering after very short amount of time.
The Treaty of Paris was signed on December 10, 1898. The US paid Spain a healthy $20 Million. In reutrn, the US gained Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philipines. The US was now considered a world power. The Filipino revolt would soon follow, though. The people there thought that they were becoming an independent nation.
I picked this event because of the States' status as a World Power.
